Matagorda Island Lighthouse
Matagorda Island Lighthouse

A short boat ride away from Caracol is Matagorda Island State Park. A barrier island, Matagorda is still in its near natural state with unblemished beaches perfect for swimming, fishing, picnicking, shell collecting or birding.

The island is also home to The Matagorda Island Lighthouse, the state’s oldest operational lighthouse. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this island beacon, which guided ships along Texas’ mid-coast before the Civil War, is again lighting the way for modern mariners thanks to a recent $1.23M overhaul.
